Scientific Materialism and the Fourth Revolt

Scientific materialism denotes the theory that all phenomena are the result of material
causes -- the result of direct interactions with bodies of some mass and volume.  The
theory of evolution, the molecular theory of gases, the germ theory of disease, and the
kinetic theory of heat are all examples of successful materialistic theories that have
reduced complicated and wondrous phenomena into comprehensible, mechanistic
systems.

Only thrice in the annals of scientific literature have followers of materialism been able to
achieve intellectual prominence and revolutionize conventional views.  The first occurred
in the fifth and fourth centuries BC during the classical antiquity of the Greek
efflorescence, peaking with Democritus' atomic theory.  The second coincided with the
seventeenth century Age of Enlightenment, brought about by the Renaissance, and
founded upon conceptual advancements of Isaac Newton and Christiaan Huygens.  And
the last culminated near the middle of the nineteenth century with the revolutions of
James Clerk Maxwell and Charles Darwin.  The Fourth Revolt is a reference to the last
materialistic revolution required now to overthrow spiritual, immaterial, extra-dimensional
or otherwise anti-mechanistic viewpoints still found in Creationism, postmodernism, and
various viewpoints in sociology and physics.
Evolution vs. Intelligent Design

One of the most persistent attacks against scientific materialism involves continued
efforts to advance the view of Creationism, now repackaged under the label,
"intelligent design."  This website assembles some of the strongest evidence for
evolution and explains clearly why all of the facts of biology, biogeography,
paleontology, and embryology necessarily require the Darwinian viewpoint.  The tale
espoused in Genesis, under scrutiny, is merely a Creation myth --  a primitive and
supernatural guess about origins that underscores the antiquated innocence of its
authors and is not unlike the Creation myths of Native Americans and many other
cultures.
